STRABAG is the largest construction company in Austria and one of the largest construction companies in Europe. With operations spanning numerous countries and 4 continents, STRABAG specialises in a variety of construction sectors, including building construction, civil engineering, and infrastructure projects. Their focus on innovative and sustainable solutions and commitment to quality and efficiency makes them a leader in the industry, continually pushing the boundaries of construction technology.

The brief.

STRABAG (i.e., their milling and emulsion sectors) needed a user-friendly app tailored to their construction crews’ specific needs and varying technical skill sets. Furthermore, the app required real-time data exchange with STRABAG’s ERP system and had to cater to diverse departments, including milling machine operators, road construction workers, and recycling personnel, each with distinct workflows and data requirements. The app also needed to be multilingual, supporting communication and information sharing across STRABAG’s international operations spanning 9 countries. Finally, ensuring the app functioned seamlessly in both online and offline environments was crucial for construction crews who may encounter limited internet connectivity on project sites.

The solution.

Understanding the intricate processes of construction orders at STRABAG was our first step. We delved into various edge cases and special scenarios to design an app that meets all user requirements. The result was the development of two easy-to-use native apps for construction workers. These apps, even when offline, display orders and provide a straightforward method for workers to document their work.

To integrate seamlessly with STRABAG’s ERP system, we ensured that orders created within the ERP are automatically dispatched to the appropriate worker’s phone. This connectivity not only streamlined order communication but also facilitated the efficient flow of information between the field and the office, automatically pushing new orders to the assigned worker’s phone and enabling accurate and timely invoicing.

The outcome.

We provided STRABAG with a robust, adaptable app solution that enhanced operational efficiency and set a new standard for digital transformation in the construction industry. The project successfully deployed two mobile applications in six languages for over 300 users, improving communication, accuracy, and productivity. Some of our achievements include:

  • Digitalising paper-based assignments and customer reports

  • Improving accuracy in task documentation and invoicing

  • Planning to consolidate into a single, highly configurable app.
